KV2: BEHIND THE LABELS
Being new to the wine biz, we know that you have to pay homage to the French to really be accepted. When it came to
design our bottles we decided what could be more French than fine wine,
cryptic labels, and a little tongue in cheek.
"Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town, waiting for someone or something to show you the way."
-Time...Pink Floyd
Wine is about a sense of place and of the people. Several of the labels pay
tribute to our little town of Coloma, Michigan.
Côte d'Lôma (hills of Coloma for those of you who
do not hablo Frencho), Coloma Sol, and Ryno Red all have to do with
where we are. We're here, on a hill, watching everyone on the highway far below drive from Detroit to Chicago and
vice versa.
They are all very busy people. But someone has to sit here and taste wine and enjoy the glorious view. It's our job. We
are moved by the words of previous Zen Masters:
"It's the work that we avoid, and we're all self employed. I love to work at nothing all day."
-Taking Care of Business...Bachman Turner Overdrive
MIDLIFE AT THE OASIS
Other labels pay tribute to those poets and philosophers who have since passed. They're still alive, they just passed
by the winery and didn't stop. We like to think our labels are
somewhat reminiscent of the lost art of album covers. Our
kids will never understand the thrill of buying an album and studying the cover in all its glory, reading every word of
every song printed somewhere on the inside and trying to figure out what the lyrics really
meant. Cherry Amour, Starry Starry
White, and Pink Side of the Moon all take us back to a time when we were younger and everything was analog instead of digital.
There might even be a few hidden messages on the back labels.
The varietal wines all use our signature label designed by a wonderful artist, Laurel Breyen of St. Joseph. We were looking
for a design that somehow signified the Yin and Yang of things. Life is full of curves and waves;
sound waves, light waves, thought waves, the waves of Lake Michigan.
Even the highway below us has that curve to it. All heading from somewhere, to somewhere. Perhaps here.
"We all shine on, like the moon and the stars and the sun."
-Instant Karma...John Lennon
We hope someday you'll join us...
